The Republika’s Pound for Pound June Edition

After last months big shakeup at the top we get to see another great boxer leave the ranks.    Sergio Martinez was blown away by Miguel Cotto, who also makes a great leap as he looked almost shot and just reinvented his career with the help of Freddy Roach.    Martinez is a sure bet for the Hall of Fame and should retire.  Adonis Stevenson also moves in the ranks after looking quite vulnerable (some say, quite his real self) in his recent win against Fanfara.   Marquez looked sensational vs Alvarado and also moves in the ranks.   Donaire and Froch also move after their wins.   Andre Ward has also left the ranks since he doesn’t have any fight scheduled and doesn’t seem to be active in the sport.

1(1).-Manny Pacquiao

After finally climbing to the top in our rankings, he now waits to see who his next rival will be.  Some say a rematch with Marquez is in the kitchen while others think he may challenge Miguel Cotto for the middleweight title.  He is also waiting to see what happens with Canelo Alvarez.

2(2).-Floyd Mayweather

Floyd-Mayweather1

After hearing that Richard Schaefer left Golden Boy, Mayweather’s team made it clear that he won’t work with Oscar de la Hoya’s company.  That of course is a lie.  Most of his potential opponents have some sort of tie with the big promotional company.  Since Mayweather promotions doesn’t hold a license in Nevada, they need to partner with one of the companies that does.   Al Haymon is not stupid.  A potential fight with Danny Garcia is in talks, he is also still thinking of fighting Amir Kahn, he even called a bluf that he would be going to the U.K to face him in a stadium.  All talk to me.

3(4).-Tim Bradley

Bradley finally got the 1 he deserved in the loss column.   He did fight valiantly against the number 1 pound for pound boxer in the world, yet fell short.  He was dominated by the masterful technique employed by Manny Pacquiao.  He was outfought, out speed, out hustled and outboxed by a better man and he knows it.  He knew it since he first met him face to face back in 2012.   That doesn’t mean he’s still up with the best.  I don’t seem him losing against anybody in the division other than Manny and Floyd, and I would probably make him even odds with Money if they were to be matched together.  He moves up thanks to Ward leaving.

4(5).-Juan Manuel Marquez

Juan Manuel Marquez, Timothy Bradley

A great performance plus Ward leaving puts him back in the Top 5.  His win over Alvarado was one of his best performances, he looked fast, strong, and most of all he looked as good as anybody in the sport.    Marquez looks for a fifth fight against Pacquiao.

5(7).-Carl Froch

_71309965_020108114-1

His fight with Groves was one of the biggest fights in British Boxing History.    The way he KO’ed the much younger man will forever ring in the heads U.K. fans.  A one punch knockout of your hated rival in front of 80,000 screaming fans couldn’t be better.

6(8).-Bernard Hopkins

Hopkins V Lipsey

Even thought I don’t like his style, we can’t deny his greatness.  With his recent win he becomes the oldest fighter to defend a world title ever.  He’s now in All Time Great status by getting in many record lists that many fighters today can’t even dream of achieving ever.   Most championship rounds, most championship fights, more championship wins, most defenses of world titles, you name it, BHop is a legend.  He deserves to be rated higher.

7(9).-Danny Garcia

Garcia’s so called homecoming didn’t go as planned.  Most of the fans and media think that he was lucky to escape with a win from Puerto Rico against rugged slick boxer, Mauricio Herrera.   In the eyes of this writer he shouldn’t have won hands down.  I’m a big Danny fan, some think I have overrated him by putting him in the top 10 of boxing’s pound for pound rankings, but I think his string of victories have proven that he is a very good fighter worthy of being considered in the elite.   He did put on a fight against Herrera and it seemed more of a Styles fight than an actual bad performance.    Lets see what the future holds for this young man, my bet is he comes back with a bang. He’s now potentially in line for fights against the top 2 boxers in the world.

8(10).-Guillermo Rigondeaux

El Chacal finally gets my approval. His recent domination of Agbeko was so good that not putting him in the Top 10 in the world would be a disservice to my favorite sport. Rigondeaux has everything that a professional fighter would love to have: power, speed, boxing ability, defense and ring smarts. The only thing laking in his game is killer instinct. That is something that he’s trying to work out because the networks are quickly growing tired of his boring fights and bad ratings. Lets see who dares to fight the man from Cuba.

9(11).-Gennady Golovkin

Gennady-Golovkin

Golovkin has finally cracked the dynamite dozen. He’s recent domination of the middleweight division only gives us a glimpse of what this man can accomplish. As the great Larry Merchant used to say “You have to trust your eyes” and my eyes tell me that we have a future hall of famer developing right in front of us. His rumored fight against Julio Cesar Chavez Jr looks to be off and will probably not happen this summer.   Look for him to face another top 10 contender and blow him away with the hope of getting Andre Ward or the winner of Sergio Martinez and Miguel Cotto.

10(26).-Miguel Cotto

756x455

A big jump for the former welterweight king.  His win over Maravilla Martinez is without a doubt the biggest in his career.  Winning the middleweight title puts him in a select group of welters that have managed to win the 160 crown.  That includes the likes of Ray Leonard, Emile Griffith and the best of all time, Ray Robinson.  Quite a nice group to belong to isn’t it?   He is also the first Puerto Rican 4 division titleist.   The best is yet to come with potential match ups against Canelo, Mayweather and Pacman.

11(12).-Wladimir Klistchko

wladimir-klitschko-wmtitel

Klitschko is making a fool out of himself by claiming records broken by fighting total bums like Leapai.   This was without a doubt the worst title challenger of all time.  He makes Joe Louis’ bum of the month club look as the second coming of the Heavyweights of the 60’s.   Wladimir is just a disgrace for the sport.

12(13).-Mikey Garcia

MikeyGarcia

Mikey finally cracks the top 12 only because some of the big names left.    He is one of the best technical fighters out there, but still needs that fight that will validate this position.    I’m very undecided if he should be ranked higher than Roman Gonzalez.  This tells why I don’t like to see his name in this list just yet.  Still he has been pushed up and that’s where he belongs.
13(14).-Roman Gonzalez
14(15).-Lucas Matthysse
15(16).-Leo SantaCruz
16(17).-Johnny Gonzalez
17(19).-Marcos Maidana
18(20).-Saul Alvarez
19(18).-Nonito Donaire
20(21).-Erislandy Lara
21(22).-Abner Mares
22(23).-Robert Guerrero
23(24).-Adonis Stevenson
24(25).-Miguel Vazquez
25(27).-Ruslan Provodnikov
26(28).-Sergei Kovalev
27(27).-Shawn Porter
28(-).-Keith Thurman
29(-).-Gallito Estrada
30(30).-George Groves

Leaving:  Sergio Martinez and Andre Ward.  Ward Leaves because he has been inactive and doesn’t have a scheduled fight.  When he fights again he will be given the benefit of the doubt and would be considered as if he had his last position.  Depending on how he looks he can recuperate his position.  Keith Thurman and Gallito Estrada enter the ranks after looking real good in their recent fights.

The following boxers are in danger of losing their spot due to inactivity or fights scheduled (Quality of Opposition):  Robert Guerrero, Mikey Garcia, Abner Mares.
Exit: Adrien Broner
